Congratulations, Nikolai from Pennsylvania, the 2026 Classical Conversations National Memory Master Champion!

On May 18, 2026, sixteen finalists competed in the Classical Conversations National Memory Master Championship aboard Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas and showcased their incredible memory skills. After a series of challenging rounds that tested even the most prepared competitors, Nikolai claimed the prestigious title and the grand prize!

Nikolai has been in the Classical Conversations Foundations program for eight years and has invested countless hours mastering facts across all three program cycles. He captivated the judges at the championship with his exceptional ability to flawlessly recall hundreds of memory facts, recite the 161-point timeline, sketch a detailed world map, and craft and deliver an impromptu story using memory work.

When not studying memory work, Nikolai enjoys playing violin and drums, building with Legos, experimenting with his 3D printer, traveling, visiting science museums, and serving at church. Nikolai reflected on what clicked during his preparation, “I learned how powerful it is to take ideas I already know and intentionally build on them. Once you have a clear main idea, you can keep adding, almost like a tree. That made putting the story together much easier and more rewarding.”

Congratulations to everyone who entered this year’s competition! Whether you proofed for the Classical Conversations Memory Master title, submitted a video entry, became a finalist, or won, we celebrate your commitment to diligence and excellence.

What is the National Memory Master Competition?

Each year, qualified students in their final year of Foundations can enter the National Memory Master Competition by submitting a video of themselves using a given prompt to tell an interesting story that includes all facts provided in the prompt. Sixteen students are then selected from across the country to participate in the National Memory Master Championship. This contest is designed to cement and celebrate the knowledge they have acquired throughout their education.

Participating in National Memory Master requires students to do more than the typical Memory Master in community by reciting memory work from all three cycles, crafting and presenting story prompts, and drawing a world map from memory.

The 2027 championship will be held during a cruise from May 2–8, 2027, on Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas. Each finalist will receive a travel stipend along with cruise fares for the finalist and one parent.

To be eligible for the National Memory Master Competition, students must:

  • be twelve years old by September 30, 2027, and in their final year of Foundations,
  • have successfully proofed as Memory Master for the current academic year and at least once during a previous year,
  • enroll in a Challenge A program for the next academic year, and
  • able to travel and compete in the National Memory Master Championship on a Royal Caribbean cruise departing from Galveston, Texas, in May 2027, and
  • fulfill additional requirements listed in the 2027 Rule Book (available fall 2026).

We asked our student how she would rate NMM and she said 10/10. After the competition we asked her if she could travel back in time one year, knowing everything about NMM that she knows now, would she encourage or discourage herself to participate in NMM. She said she would still encourage herself to do it because she knows it is helping her grow and trust in the Lord.

I can’t think of a more significant experience to capstone F/E. This was probably the biggest, most memorable event of my student’s young life and it has highly impacted mine too! It seems silly but this was so much more than just memorizing and money, it was so God-filled!

For me it was a final celebration of the memory work of Foundations and Essentials and a welcoming shift into the Challenge years and deeper learning. The competition was filled with laughter, celebration, and meaningful friendships. It wasn’t about winning, it was about glorifying God.

Our family had a magical experience at NMM. The kids bonded in a very special way and the event gave us a deeper appreciation for the goodness and beauty of CC. It truly was special for us to see the large community of CC and realize what an incredible group of families we are a part of. It was a taste of the heavenliness! We are so grateful for this very special once in a lifetime moment our family got to experience.
