Make sure you are spending enough time talking and learning about God
The most important thing to add to Foundations should be ways to learn about God. Reading the Bible or holding a devotion together as a family can be really helpful in discipling your children and growing spiritually together. But spending time in the Word is only one way to teach your children about God. For instance, in your child’s studies of history, you can ask him or her questions like, “Why do you think God allowed this to happen?” Or, in your child’s studies of science, questions like “How does this demonstrate God’s intelligent design of the universe?” can be great opportunities for your child to grow spiritually.
There is no sense in completely separating the spiritual and academic realms. Instead, integrate learning about God through learning about history, science, math, geography, etc.
Foundations is the perfect base to build upon
Since Foundations provides a comprehensive education on the basics of crucial subjects, you do not have to add any more material if you don’t want to. In this short interview, this homeschool mom recommends adding more reading. The Foundations period is a great opportunity to foster a love of learning in your child by providing additional reading material in those areas they are most interested in. It’s always a good idea to read aloud too! For example, if you notice your child is becoming a history buff, reading The Story of the World could be a great option for encouraging his or her fascination.
How can I apply this to my life?
First, remember that bringing your children up to follow the Lord is most important. No matter whether they are in Foundations, Essentials, or Challenge, reading the Bible and talking about God should always be a part of their education. Second, keep in mind that Foundations offers a structure that can stand alone or be built upon. You don’t have to add anything to it if you don’t want to. But you can never have enough reading, so if you and your child are up for it, feel free to add some more reading in the subjects they love!
